JCB donates towards £106,000 church restoration

Construction equipment specialist JCB has contributed towards the £106,000 restoration of a medieval church.

The firm donated £15,000 to help remove, restore and retune six 254-year-old bells at Grade I-listed All Saints Church in Checkley, Staffordshire.

The work comes as part of a 10-year-long regeneration project, during which the church’s bell tower was strengthened and a new steel frame installed.

Heather Graham, treasurer at All Saints Church, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that JCB has supported the project.

“It’s nice to see a local company doing something like this, forging a unique partnership with the community.

“When the newly retuned bells pealed again in March this year, it was quite phenomenal.”

The original bell frame had been constructed from Elizabethan ship’s timbers, though the bells themselves had been cast in 1762.

Prior to JCB’s donation, they had not been rung properly in 12 years.

Founded in the 12th century, the church is said to incorporate every architectural style since the Norman invasion.
